|Elected L.A. Officials Join the Cause: Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2015|
As co-chair of the L.A. Domestic Violence Task Force Event Planning Committee, AWBW's Community Engagement Manager Christy Turek has been the driving force of making art workshops available to elected officials and advocates. On August 5th members of the City of Los Angeles District Attorney's Office Family Violence Unit participated in AWBW's longstanding Pearls of Wisdom workshop with a twist inspired by our Touchstones project.
The workshop provided an opportunity for the attorneys and advocates to creatively share, support, and bring awareness to the critical issue of domestic violence later in life, which is the focus for the 2015 October Day of Action at LA City Hall. Artwork created during the workshop will be featured at the Day of Action and accompanying month-long exhibition Pearls of Wisdom: End the Violence installed in the L.A. City Hall East Bridge Gallery.
The workshop provided a much-appreciated break for the attorneys and advocates from their typical workday. Taking the time to create art while listening to relaxing music inspired them to consider incorporating art workshops into their staff meetings as a form of self-care. One of the advocates shared how she feels the art workshops would be a powerful way to support clients throughout their court proceedings.
