Thank you, JIB Fund Community Building Initiative!

Community members gather to take action together

The visionary JIB Fund Community Building Initiative has had a pivotal impact on A Window Between Worlds. We have never before seen community defined so beautifully, and so fully in alignment with what AWBW accomplishes through our art programs for survivors of domestic violence. Having been asked "what are you dying to do?" has planted the seeds of new concepts and visions that will permanently strengthen our work.

The JIB Fund has allowed us to take the profound heart opening power that AWBW art sessions have shared for over 22 years, within domestic violence shelters, and root this life-changing resource in the greater community. As a result, partner agencies and individuals have been empowered to become agents of change, using art to break isolation and forge community connection to break the cycle of interpersonal violence.

In 2013, AWBW partnered intensively with three lead sites, Rainbow Services, Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF), and WomenShelter of Long Beach (WSLB), to pilot I CAN WE CAN as a community resource. Survivors and non-survivors alike were invited to create art as a symbol of solidarity, a commitment to doing what they CAN to help end violence in their own lives and in their communities.

See the postive impact the JIB Fund has made on our three lead partners: WomenShelter of Long Beach, Rainbow Services, and Center for the Pacific Asian Family.

The pilot provided comprehensive resources for AWBW's full network of Los Angeles partner agencies to use I CAN WE CAN to bridge their in-shelter and out-of-shelter communities. Our work in 2013 culminated in workshops, exhibitions, events and large-scale projections throughout Los Angeles during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, October 2013.

A family puts their hands together
to say WE CAN

Since the project launch in 2012:

  • Over 8,300 survivors and community members have created I CAN WE CAN hands.
  • Over 260 I CAN WE CAN art workshops have taken place throughout Los Angeles, and as far as Australia and Iran.
  • The project has been shared in eight languages: English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Farsi, and includes online resources for these constituencies.
  • I CAN WE CAN offers an ongoing circle of support, and more than 160 community members have stayed in touch, sharing I CAN stories of hope, survival and strength.

We are deeply grateful for The JIB Fund's partnership. The evolution set in motion by our JIB grant will permanently impact the trajectory of AWBW and raise the level of community-building impact we are able to achieve for years to come throughout Los Angeles.
