It was surprising to learn that I felt I couldn't be healed, couldn't be loved. My reaction was, "I can learn to love myself; love heals."

Volunteering at AWBW twice a week has meant that I've been involved in the I CAN process from the beginning. I'm amazed by the outpouring of creativity from total strangers. I'm constantly seeing new hands that just blow me away!
I look back at the hands I created in the beginning and I've come so far since those early days! The hands have been part of a major shift in conscious awareness for me. They have been mirrors where I've seen the areas in me that are still running on fears born in denial and repression. In particular, the hands have been liberating for my feelings of fear around vulnerability. I've 'come out' of the hiding I learned to do which helped me to survive, but now goes against my need to move beyond survival.
Of all the AWBW projects I've been involved in, the I CAN hands have had the most impact because through them I was able to give voice to my issues around love and intimacy. Sometimes I don't even know I've made a decision about something until I hear myself speaking about it out loud to others. The hands give me a way to speak out after a lifetime of silence and invisibility. Why the hands in particular? I think because they symbolize openness, my willingness to be open in the world.
