The Survivors Art Circle I CAN WE CAN workshop warm-up exercise was to share one thing that “we were told we couldn’t do or thought we couldn’t do, but did it anyway and succeeded."
I immediately thought of something my ex-husband said to me before I left him: “If you divorce me you will lose everything!” My hand reflects my defiance of that moment. Not only did I not lose everything, but I am doing quite well, as difficult as things may still be from time to time.
I decided to make my hand a sun, to show that "I CAN Shine" despite the trauma that at various points has cast a shadow over my life. I continued with "I Will Prosper" because in addition to what my ex said to me, I was told by various people, in an informative way, that men fare far better than women do after divorce, especially when children are involved. While that may be statistically valid, I am determined to do more than just be okay.
The workshop was a very positive experience for me as it reinforced my resolve to not just feel like I am surviving, but to feel absolutely triumphant! The community project as a whole gave me a further infusion of hope by illustrating how many people care about the issue of DV and are willing to participate in this ongoing effort to help bring about significant societal change.
