I CAN be the change I wish to see in the world.
* The following is an update from the artist, submitted on August 6, 2013:
My I CAN was based off of Gandhi’s quote, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." I was feeling like there’s so much talk about taking action, but fear so often gets in the way. I wanted to step up and be a catalyst for actual, substantial change.
One way that I felt I could begin to effect change was to apply to graduate school to obtain a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs. My goal is to provide a safe and open space to talk about domestic violence, both for students who have histories of domestic violence, and for those who are currently going through it. I remember from my own college experience that I hadn’t even heard about domestic violence until someone I was dating was accused of being violent towards another woman he was dating at the same time. It prompted me to really wonder how I, and so many others, had been so unaware of such a poignant issue. It was then that I sought to form avenues of awareness, openness, and discussion.
After working with Windows, I realized even more that there is such a great need for colleges to have a safe space to talk about domestic violence issues. Since creating my I CAN, I’ve been accepted into graduate school, as well as an assistantship in which I will be implementing different programs for students. I hope to implement a program specifically dedicated to domestic violence awareness, perhaps even a Windows program. Making my I CAN made me feel scared and anxious, because I felt like I was saying, “I can,” when I was really feeling like, “I can’t.” But looking back at the changes that have occurred since making my I CAN and seeing how my dreams and I CANs have manifested, I know now more than ever that I CAN Be the Change.
