My hand is a creation of my personal accomplishment. I have accomplished many things that make me feel very proud of myself. I could not have made these achievements without my friends and family who have held my hand and helped me in various ways.
* The following is an update from the artist, submitted on July 19, 2013:
Not that long ago, I used to write “IT’S OK” on my wrist. I thought of even tattooing it. Sometimes things seemed so difficult for me and I coped by looking down on my wrist and reminding myself that everything will turn out okay. I lived in survival mode.
The first time I wrote my "I CAN” it felt impossible for me to think of five simple things I could do. So, I wrote things that I had already accomplished, things that seemed impossible at one time. This activity gave me the opportunity to reflect on the difficult things I had overcome: losing weight, public speaking, driving, forgiving, and changing my life, free of abuse from others and to myself. I did all of these things with the help and support of others.
The second time I created an “I CAN” hand it seemed easier. I picked things that I wanted to do; things that maybe I could learn. I also sat next to my daughter who created her “I CAN.” This gave me the opportunity to teach and plant the idea of hope for my daughter and myself. These were new concepts for me.
Since then I have created many new "I CAN" hands and it gets easier each time. My self-esteem is growing and I CAN do many things I want to do. The “I CAN” project has personally helped me transition my life from being in survival mode all the time, which I was used to, and start to focus on living my life to its fullest… building self-esteem and self-confidence. I'm starting to vision possibilities and dreams, sitting down and really putting it out there in the universe. I CAN be happy. I CAN create a beautiful life. I CAN if I say I can.
